Video Production Boot Camp:  January 11 – 15, 2010.  Private training for MIT Journalism Fellows.  Closed to the public.

Video Production Boot Camp:  January 23/24 & January 30/31, 2010.  Private training for Knight-Bagehot Fellows.  Closed to the public.

Video Production Boot Camp:  Feb. 27/28 and Mar. 6/7 2010.  This boot camp runs over the course of two weekends, rather than one full week.  More info on how to register coming soon.

Five-Day Digital Multimedia Boot Camp

Learn digital production skills to tell compelling multimedia stories.

January 4 to 8, 2010
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily

Where: Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, 2950 Broadway, New York, NY 10027

Overview: Over the course of five days, participants will learn the basics of visual storytelling concepts through video production, post-production with Final Cut Pro and basic elements of Photoshop. Participants will leave with concrete skills and a better understanding of the technologies that are transforming the news business.

Field Work: Equipped with the professional production tools, participants will learn the fundamentals of video production, including shooting techniques, sound collecting, interview techniques, lighting, field production tips, and story planning and scripting.

Post-Production: Participants will learn to edit video and audio using Final Cut Pro.  Topics covered include: log and transfer, file management, editing sequences, audio mixing, importing assets (video, audio and photos), animating images, creating audio slideshows, advanced editing techniques, exporting finished videos, and an introduction to Photoshop for text and photo editing.

Course Requirements: This is a fast-paced class that requires participants to be comfortable working with computers at an intermediate level, as well as with new software.  No previous video production is necessary.

Final Cut Pro Workshop: December 5 & 6

In this two-day intensive workshop, participants will learn how to use Final Cut Pro to tell compelling multimedia stories. They will leave with the skills and techniques necessary to edit professional-quality videos and slideshows with audio.

December 5 & 6, 2009
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, 2950 Broadway, New York, NY 10027

Overview: Participants will receive hands-on instruction in a small class setting. Each student will have his/her own workstation, equipped with the latest version of Final Cut Pro.  Students will learn to capture footage, import images, text and audio files, edit from larger clips and trim footage in a timeline. Participants will also learn how to mix audio levels, create text, animate images and export video for broadcast or the Web.

Course Requirements: This class requires participants to be comfortable working with computers at an intermediate level, as well as with new software.  No previous video production or Final Cut Pro knowledge is necessary.
